We finally received our own static display, AH-1F Cobra helicopter.
This project started over a year ago and it has been a real challenge.
There is no way we can thank all of those individuals who put forth a tremendous
effort to see to it we received this helicopter.
We do want to say a special thanks to Maj. (LtCol. Selectee) Frank Millerd,
Commander of Aviation Support Battalion, Western Army Aviation Training Site (WAATS),
Silverbell Army Heliport, Bldg L4550, Marana, AZ. It would not have come about without the generous
donation from VFW Post 5560 in Utah footing the money over for us....and
the trucking company that physically transported the cobra, which brought a special
low boy truck, just for the transport of the Utah chopper and delivering ours.
Without the dedication of Major Millerd and his unit personnel, we could not
have pulled this off. There are three phases for our acquisition of this Cobra Helicopter,
Tail number 68-17104.
Phase One is was the preparation that was required before we could even submit the paperwork.
This consisted of a concrete pad, which had to meet specific guidelines as outlined in the
information packet we received when we first began looking into acquiring this helicopter.
Phase Two was the delivery and setup of the helicopter. This is where VFW Post 5560 (Vernal, UT),
Major Millerd and his unit personnel provided the transportation of the Cobra Helicopter to our
Local Post 10254 here in Three Points, AZ. An owner of a trucking company and member of VFW
Post 5560 donated time and equipment to make this happen. A very special thanks to Dalbo,
Inc and VFW Post 5560.
Phase Three was spent preparing our Cobra so it would be
ready for our formal dedication. Many of our members
spent their off time during the week, evenings and
weekends painting and placing the stencils on the
Cobra.
January 25, 2003 we held the formal dedication of our
Cobra. This is also our 31st anniversary of our
Charter. We had various dignitaries and honored guests
at this ceremony. The public was invited to
participate in the dedication and ceremony.
